Frongoch Mine

Frongoch (Pont Ceunant)_Resized
Frongoch Mine
During 2012 the Trust carried out an archaeological survey of the lower dressing area, prior to Environment Agency (Wales) works there. This was to record what was there and also to identify any features at risk by these works. A full report is contained in the May 2013 newsletter (which you can read here). You can see some pictures of our work at the site in 2012 on the Welsh Mines Society website here.
In 2007 the Trust carried out a clean up operation at Pont Ceunant Generating Station at Frongoch. You can read more about this and view pictures of the clean up here.

Temple Mine Survey

Temple Mine 1

Temple Mine Survey

In 2007 the Trust was asked to undertake a survey of Temple Mine by the owners the Countryside Council for Wales. This was mainly due to the continuing deterioration of the 40 foot wheel-pit. It was felt that this should be recorded. The Trust saw this as an opportunity to publicise the plight of the wheel-pit, in the hope that funding could be found to restore it.

Penyclun Engine House Restoration

In 2005 the Trust were approached by CADW (the Welsh equivalent of English Heritage) to manage a project to conserve the building remains at Penyclun Mine. The Trust employed a local builder Harry Naylor and the conservation project was completed within budget..

Pont Ceunant Generating Station (Frongoch) (SN 709 743)

In 2007 with funding from Ceredigion County Council’s “Spirit of the Miners” Project, we carried out a clean up operation at Pont Ceunant Generating Station, this had become a local dump for household rubbish and “white goods”.

All the rubbish was cleared and now the building which is of “cathedral size” proportions is appreciated as a local historical feature. An interpretation board has been installed, in such a position that prevents cars stopping at the site to unload material to dump. A grille has been fitted at the entrance to prevent further dumping, this was designed by the late Steve Oliver and constructed by the local blacksmith Clive Davies from nearby Abermagwr. It shows the transition from water power to electric power.

A full archaeological excavation of the floor was undertaken, following which we were able to produce a ground plan showing where all the equipment was sited.

Our thanks to the landowner Henry Williams and his family for their help with this project.

In 2015 the Royal Commission for Ancient and Historic Monuments in Wales, with assistance from the WMPT have produced a video animation of the Pont Ceunant Generating Station at Frongoch. You can view it below.

Graig Goch

Excavation complete

Graig Goch Mine (SN 740 740)

The close neighbour of Pont Ceunant Generating Station. Here in 2009 we carried out some archaeological investigations to survey and record the remaining features on the site. We found the remains of two buddles and some wooden launders. We also found parts of the wooden frame of a surface waterwheel, these were probably a common feature of the area but this was the only one found and recorded so far. We hope to return at some point to continue our investigations.
