In early October 2013, two working days were organised by Simon Timberlake, to continue conservation work on the “Tan Yr Allt” boiler. Simon and three volunteers carried out an amazing amount of work during the day.
All of the loose rust and scale was removed and two coats of red-oxide primer were applied. During the work the boiler was turned so that it now stands upright, which will help to stop water accumulating inside.
Over the winter we hope to find a suitable home in Aberystwyth for the boiler, so it can become a monument to a long lost industry and commemorate the manufacturer George Green who’s Foundry stood in Alexandra Road, almost opposite the railway station.
An excellent job, well done to Simon Timberlake, and our colleagues from the Early Mines Research Group Brenda Craddock, Anthony Gilmour and Phil Andrews.
